Let’s Get Hammer(ed)

My least favorite thing about running is the awful feeling I get in my stomach as I stand in the kitchen leading up to a race. Obviously, nerves play a factor into my uneasy feelings, but they are mixed with whatever food I try to choke down before a race.  If I had a choice, I wouldn’t eat anything before a race. However, I would obviously be signing up for a major bonk if I didn’t fuel properly.

So year after year, race after race I tried everything before the gun went off; some fruit, cereal, bars, or gels. Nothing worked, until now. Simply put: Hammer Nutration’s Sustained Energy delivers!

A few weeks ago I decided it was time to test out Sustained Energy before the summer racing season was in full season.  A few hours prior to a speed workout I treated my body like it was race morning.  Instead of the usual  banana and (awful) energy bar I switched it up with Sustained Energy.  I mixed three scoops of the powder  with water in a 20 oz water bottle. This drink mimicked my breakfast and it certainly paid off when it came to my workout.

After that workout experience, I knew Sustained Energy was going to be my go to choice for this past weekend’s triathlon.  The best part about the powder is the fact that it’s unflavored. No more awful tasting mixes! Before leaving the house, I mixed up the Sustained Energy and also had one slice of toast with peanut butter. After finishing off the toast I continued to sip on the drink.

Upon arriving at the race site, I can honestly say my stomach didn’t feel bloated or uneasy.  My usual digestion issues weren’t there and I didn’t have any type of hungry feeling. As I was walking down to the swim start I had nervous energy, but it wasnt mixed with anything else. Amen!

The race was a lot of fun and I didn’t have to worry about my nutrition thanks to Hammer. As the race played out, I felt on my game (minus the awful swim). It amazed me that one simple drink could make such a difference.

This week I will be focused on running a very hard effort at the Xterra Trail race in Richmond, VA. After reviewing past results, I have a good chance at performing very well. My legs and mind are certainly ready for a big challenge Saturday morning. Come race morning my stomach will be too, thanks to Hammer Nutrtion’s Sustained Energy.

A couple additional thoughts:

Since it was shorter tri, I didnt see a need for any extra Sustained Energy. I would certainly consider an additional amount if I was doing a longer distance or just a regular marathon. A special thanks to Steve Speirs who introduced me to Hammer nutrition.  Based out of Virginia Beach, VA Steve is a great a person and certainly speedy!
